A Message From Thom:

What Thom's Been Up To:

Continuing The Fight To Stop Removal Of C-130s From Fort Bragg

Thom successfully secured an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2016 that requires the commanders of the XVIII Airborne Corps, 82nd Airborne Division and the United States Army Special Operations Command to certify that the removal of C-130Hs from Fort Bragg’s Pope Airfield will not adversely impact the daily training requirements of airborne and special operations units. If the commanders do not certify the removal, then the C-130Hs will remain at Pope Airfield.

"On Thursday, the Senate Armed Services Committee unanimously approved N.C. Sen. Thom Tillis' amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that requires Fort Bragg commanders to approve the closure of the 440th before it can happen. Tillis' measure says the 18th Airborne Corps, the 82nd Airborne Division and the Army Special Operations Command all must certify that the loss of the Air Force Reserve wing won't harm their training mission."

Promoting Farm To School Nutrition Programs

When addressing the issues and needs of proper childhood nutrition, Thom believes we should look to parents, students, and cafeteria staff in our schools, not bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. While big government nutrition programs are well-intentioned, they’re lacking flexibility and being forced upon our schools at the local level in a manner that’s simply counterproductive. Thom visited Patterson Farm in Rowan County and Tuckaseegee Elementary School in Charlotte to learn first-hand how North Carolina is a true leader in farm-to-school programs.

Fighting For Coastal, Seasonal Businesses

Thom recently met with members of the North Carolina seafood industry to address their concerns around the current H-2B Visa crisis. On the brink of peak season without workers to sustain business, Thom has been a leading advocate in a bipartisan effort pushing for coastal state seasonal workers to obtain H-2B Visas for legal immigrant workers to fill these open positions. Thom recently demanded the Department of Homeland Security explain why the issuance cap for H-2B Visas was met much earlier than previous years, but he has yet to receive an explanation and the damage to our Atlantic Coast seafood industry is already being felt.

In Case You Missed It:

Tillis Honors Fallen Heroes On Memorial Day

On Memorial Day, Thom spoke to active military, veterans and their families during a service in Gaston County:

“Our military servicemembers wake up each morning ready to defend our freedoms at all costs. We will never be able to repay the debt of gratitude we owe to the courageous men and women who make the ultimate sacrifice. We must do everything we can to fulfill our moral responsibility to help care for the families of our fallen heroes, who bear the pain of living each day without their loved ones. North Carolina is a state blessed with a storied military tradition, and the greatest honor I have had as Senator is meeting with our brave servicemembers and veterans and personally thanking them for their incredible devotion and love for our country.”

Tillis Visits Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point

“There’s no replacement, no matter how many committee meetings you have, for being able to come out here and see how the decisions in Washington are playing out on the ground — things that I can bring back and give additional insights on,” Tillis said. “I like having the opportunity to talk to all levels; talking to the newer Marines, talking to the spouses.”

Tillis Introduces Bipartisan Road to Opportunity and Development (ROAD) Act of 2015

Thom introduced The Road to Opportunity and Development (ROAD) Act of 2015. The bipartisan legislation designates the Raleigh-Norfolk Corridor as a future part of the interstate system, while creating opportunities for increased commerce and investment in infrastructure and jobs.
