The Air Force had planned to inactivate the unit this fall, and had already started the exodus of airmen to other airfields. But members of Congress - led by Sen. Thom Tillis and Rep. Renee Ellmers - had put up a furious battle against the plan
Tillis' senior policy adviser, Fayetteville native Robert Wilkie, said Monday that the Air Force is "starting to see the handwriting on the wall." He added that, "The fate of the 440th is not simply an Air Force budget issue, it is a national security issue."
So kudos to Tillis and Ellmers for a fight well-fought - and cheers in advance for a fight well-continued.
