U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis will tour the Charles George VA Medical Center in East Asheville Thursday and the center is holding an open house for the public to explore volunteer opportunities at the center the same day.
Tillis, a Huntersville Republican, is working with the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs to come up with a strategy to improve the operations of the department. It's been hit in recent years by reports of wasteful spending and falsified data on how long veterans have to wait to receive care.
Tillis is a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee and a former corporate consultant who was elected in November 2014. He has already visited the three other VA Medical Centers in the state, in Fayetteville, Salisbury and Wilmington.
He suggested earlier this year in a committee meeting that he and a Democratic senator be designated to work with VA Secretary Robert McDonald on a strategic plan for the agency.
