Tillis said that some students believe college is the only path to success, while others want to go straight from high school to the working world. The state’s communities need programs that expose students to college, community college and trades so they get a sense of what the working world is like.

“We also need to do a better job of connecting veterans to jobs,” he said. “If you’re driving heavy equipment in Iraq or Afghanistan,” Tillis said, “you can probably drive a tractor trailer in North Carolina.”
