The inaction was odd, because it was Republicans, led by Thom Tillis — now a U.S. senator and then the speaker of the N.C. House of Representatives — who passed the 2013 law after Democratic-controlled legislatures had refused for many years to act.
Tillis continues to work on behalf of victims, introducing legislation in the Senate to make sure their payments from the state aren’t counted as income and used to decrease any federal benefits they receive.
That does no good, however, for people who were forced into abortions or sterilizations at the county level and have been told they can’t receive the compensation they deserve for so much suffering and grief.
A Tillis spokesman told The Charlotte Observer that the senator is working behind the scenes to encourage legislators to fix the flawed legislation so that “we keep our promises to victims.”
