North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis is co-sponsoring a bill that would increase funding for mental health and for law enforcement agencies across the country.
The Response Act is part of an effort to reduce mass shootings in the U.S. It boosts school safety by increasing access to active shooter training.
It also encourages the death penalty for people who commit mass murders.
News 13 talked to Henderson County Sherriff Lowell Griffin about the bill.
“You commit mass violence and there is going to be more immediate penalties, (I'm) hopeful that’s really a deterrent," Griffin said. "That’s what we are looking for. That’s what the senators are looking for in this bill.”
The bill would also give new tools to law enforcement agencies, and encourage internet service providers to work with them to prevent mass shootings.
