Asheville Regional Airport has received a significant boost to its plans to double its terminal size: a $10 million-plus federal grant.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao, as well as U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-NC, joined airport officials the morning of Nov. 22 to announce the funding and what it means to the burgeoning regional facility, which has seen a 67 percent increase in passenger service in the past five years. That makes AVL, which also crossed the million-passenger mark last year, one of the fastest-growing airports in the country.
… Tillis spoke before Chao, noting that "it's thrilling to see how much progress has been made at this airport." He also thanked Chao for her work as transportation secretary in Donald Trump's administration, as well as her service as Secretary of Labor under former President George W. Bush.
"Secretary Chao has been an incredible partner for North Carolina," Tillis said, mentioning past federal allocations, including $26 million in hurricane recovery funds for transportation improvements in the eastern part of the state, and another $13 million in airport funding in the Piedmont.
"Today's celebration is another indication that Secretary Chao understands getting out across the country, recognizing the needs of the state and working with us to produce these results (that) are good for North Carolina," Tillis said.
