Gun control, veterans, and re-election were topics Senator Thom Tillis tackled as he visited Wilmington, Tuesday.
He, along side Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie, visited the Wilmington VA Health Care Clinic and Bitty and Beau's Coffee Shop.
Tillis says, when it comes to the mass shootings that happened over the weekend, he is pushing for red flag laws. Red flag laws could temporarily prevent someone deemed a danger to themselves or others from purchasing or possessing a firearm.
"Senator Graham chairs the judiciary committee which I sit on," said Tillis. "I told him I'll do everything that I can to help him. The president supports this. He's working with Senator Blumenthal from the democratic conference and I expect us to be able to take action."
Tillis says leadership from the Republican and Democratic parties are working together to put legislation to a vote in September.
After the tour of the VA Clinic, Secretary Wilkie says 20 veterans still commit suicide everyday. They are working to get more veterans through their doors for assistance.
"The majority of veterans who take their lives are not within the VA system, and that majority also impacts the Vietnam generation, " said Wilkie. "So, what we are doing is working with the states, and localities, and the charitable organizations to go out and help us find those veterans."
Wilkie and Tillis finished their day at Bitty and Beau's meeting with local veterans. Tillis says he is taking big lessons from this term, as he goes for re-election.
"The lesson we should all learn is the extreme positions at either end of the spectrum are almost certainly not the positions that are going to have enduring impact and impact people's lives," said Tillis.
