A Message from Thom:

What Thom’s Working On:

Stopping the President From Closing Guantanamo Bay

This week, President Obama announced his plan to close Guantanamo Bay and transfer some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists to American soil. So many brave men and women risked their lives to capture these very same terrorists, and they were sent to Guantanamo so they would pose no risk to the American people. The Obama administration’s transfer of terrorists from Guantanamo to other countries has already proven to be an unmitigated disaster, resulting in terrorists returning to the battlefield to jeopardize the national security of America and our allies. Thom will do everything he can to stop the president’s plan and keep Guantanamo terrorists out of America.

Fighting Heroin and Prescription Painkiller Addiction

Thom recently wrote an op-ed addressing the growing epidemic of opioid abuse in North Carolina and across the country. In 2014, 1,358 North Carolinians died from drug overdoses. To put that into context, that’s more than the number of North Carolinians who died in automobile accidents. The Senate will soon begin debating the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act. Thom has co-sponsored this groundbreaking legislation, which brings together the experiences and recommendations of drug addiction experts, law enforcement, health care providers, first responders, and those most affected by the opioid epidemic. Thom will fight to get this legislation passed and help those people in need.

"Our nation needs smart, commonsense approaches such as the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act. However, we must be honest in recognizing that success will be neither quick nor easy. Addiction is a vicious and devastating cycle of abuse and despair. It affects us all. The fight against addiction is one we must wage together, and one we cannot afford to lose." - Senator Thom Tillis

In Case You Missed It:

Ensuring Students Get the Nutrition They Need

Last week, Thom visited Belmont Central Elementary School to visit with students and advocate for better and healthier schools meals. Thom talked with the cafeteria staff, ate with students, and met with school officials about legislation that would give school systems nationwide more flexibility in determining the types of food served to students. Thom's goal is for schools to serve more appetizing healthy meals that children want to eat. The legislation is currently under review by the U.S. Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee. Thom hopes it will come across the President’s desk later this year.

“We want to get to a point where we can go into any school like this one and know that the meals being served reach this level of nutritional standards,” he said. “More importantly, not that the meals are getting to that nutritional standard but that the majority of the students are eating them.” - Senator Thom Tillis

Fighting Plan to Cut Tricare Autism Reimbursement Rates

Thom questioned plans from the Pentagon to reduce Tricare rates for autism therapy specialists, expressing concern that the pay cut will result in few providers willing to accept Tricare patients. Tricare officials announced late last year that they plan to reduce reimbursement rates for providers for "applied behavior analysis" autism therapy by as much as 35 percent for providers in certain locations.

"The ABA treatment for persons with autism and the proposed rate cut is something that I'm concerned with the timing of. I think we may be making a mistake cutting treatment options below the national average and produce a bad outcome for something, I think, that has been proven to be highly effective and highly beneficial to those that take advantage of the treatment." - Senator Thom Tillis
