What Thom’s Working On:

Passing Legislation to Fight Heroin and Prescription Painkiller Addiction

Congress began March by passing the bipartisan Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) of 2015, legislation Thom co-sponsored. CARA takes a big step in the right direction by providing grants to substance abuse agencies, local governments, and non-profit organizations in areas of North Carolina and the rest of the nation that are being hit the hardest by the opioid epidemic. Thom previously wrote an op-ed on this issue and spoke on the Senate floor to urge passage of the bill. Watch the speech here.

Proactively Identifying Health Issues for Veterans

Thom partnered with Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) to introduce the bipartisan Helping Veterans Exposed to Burn Pits Act to help veterans who have been exposed to toxic burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan. Health effects from exposure to chemicals found in burn pits may include cancer, neurological effects, reproductive effects, respiratory toxicity, and cardiovascular toxicity. This important legislation would create a center of excellence within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in the prevention, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment, and rehabilitation of health conditions relating to exposure to burn pits.

If you are a veteran or know a veteran who is having trouble getting care from the VA for any issue, please do not hesitate to contact my Raleigh office at 919-856-4630 or Charlotte office at 704-509-9087.

Welcoming North Carolina's Newest U.S. Citizens

Thom helped welcome North Carolina's newest American citizens by attending a naturalization ceremony in Charlotte, where he handed out Certificates of Legalization and congratulated North Carolina residents who immigrated to the United States and took the sacred Oath of Allegiance, their final step to becoming American citizens.

“Often times during this ceremony you’ll have folks who’ve already served in the armed services, willing to lay down their lives for a country their not even yet citizens of. So this is the best of America. They’re what make us really great.” - Sen. Thom Tillis on WJZY

Thank you for taking the time to read my update, I will continue to work hard to represent all North Carolinians in the Senate and deliver results. As always, please don't hesitate to contact my office if we can assist you in any matter regarding a government agency.

All the best,
