Securing an Additional $125 Million for NC Hurricane Matthew Relief

For more than a year, I’ve been working with Senator Burr and members of North Carolina’s Congressional delegation to ensure North Carolina has the funds needed to help local communities recover from the long-term destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew. Last week, I voted in favor of the Senate’s two-year budget agreement that included $125 million in additional funding for our state’s recovery efforts.

The budget agreement also gives our Armed Forces the certainty and resources they need to keep our country safe and includes the following provisions:

  • $4 billion for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to clear their maintenance backlog and provide quality facilities for America’s veterans.
  • $6 billion over two years to combat the opioid addiction and substance abuse epidemic across the country through funding new grants, prevention programs, and law enforcement efforts in vulnerable communities.
  • $20 billion to invest in America’s infrastructure.
  • 4 years of funding for the critical Children's Health Insurance Program. This is in addition to the 6 year extension included the previous Continuing Resolution, bringing funding for CHIP until 2028.

Moving on to Immigration Reform

This week, the Senate will debate various legislative proposals that address DACA, border security and immigration policy. Last year, I introduced the SUCCEED Act, a solution to address the legal uncertainty facing undocumented children and young undocumented adults who were brought to the United States as children.

This is an issue I have been focused on since being elected, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle this week.

Supporting an Investigation into the U.S Olympic Committee & USA Gymnastics

Last week, I spoke at a joint press conference in the U.S. Capitol to unveil a resolution led by U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Joni Ernst (R-IA) to establish a special committee in the Senate to investigate the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and USA Gymnastics regarding how team doctor Larry Nassar was allowed to sexually abuse female gymnasts over decades. The U.S. Olympic Committee clearly showed a lapse in judgement in not protecting the female gymnasts who were abused by Larry Nasser, and we should do everything in our power to investigate the USOC to ensure people are held accountable so this never happens again.

Social Media Recap

Last week, I spoke on the Senate floor on the need to prevent another government shutdown.

As Team USA begins competing in Pyeongchang, I answered a few questions about the Winter Olympics.

On Thursday, my staff and I joined Senator Join Ernst on an early morning hike on the National Mall. It was a little chilly but we finished!
