Thom In The News
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) is reminding his GOP colleagues of an old adage as they start work on a bill to repeal ObamaCare: Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good.
"My Republican colleagues would be making a mistake if they become content with failing to produce the perfect at the expense of achieving good, practical solutions to reform our nation’s broken health care system," he said.
Tillis doesn't specifically mention his conservative colleagues, but his comments come as a House repeal bill — rolled out Monday night — receives early heavy fire from some conservative senators, as well as members of the House Freedom Caucus.
The House is expected to vote on the legislation in committee this week, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) telling reporters that he expects the Senate will take up the bill by early April when lawmakers leave town for a two-week Easter recess.
Meanwhile, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said they will introduce a clean bill to repeal ObamaCare, as Congress did in 2015.
Many Senate GOP lawmakers are staying on the sidelines over the House proposal, telling reporters on Tuesday that they were still reviewing the details of the bill.
Tillis said that he will review the House plan but added that "partisan politics" shouldn't block the GOP effort to repeal the bill.
"Even ObamaCare’s strongest supporters will acknowledge that ObamaCare is on an unsustainable course, and major corrective action needs to be taken," he added.
The Senate GOP will need 51 votes to clear the repeal measure through the upper chamber. With no Democrats expected to support the repeal, GOP leadership can only afford to lose two Republican votes.
