Last week, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) participated in an immigration roundtable hosted by the Bipartisan Policy Center where he highlighted his immigration reform framework and the potential path forward.

Senator Tillis on past attempts to reform the immigration system:
“I think it’s kind to say that we haven’t made much progress on immigration reform over the last 30 years. I characterize it differently; I think it has been a consistent series of failures. It has been a failure of leadership, it has been a failure of discipline, it has been a failure of focus, it has been a failure on execution. We need to look at doing it differently. We need to step away from the ‘swing for the fences, strike out’ approaches of the past. That’s why we haven’t gotten this done.”

Senator Tillis also on how a number of immigration reform elements may be packaged in the series of bills:
“We’ve created a framework that is really trying to think about the logical groupings of different measures that we could put into bills and start working on getting the votes on both sides of the aisle to get it done. I think about DACA with border security, I’m optimistic that you can get support. Think about work visas with E-Verify and other enforcement actions against employers who are knowingly executing employment practices that are disadvantageous to American workers.”

Senator Tillis was joined at the roundtable by former Governor of Mississippi Haley Barbour, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Henry Cisneros, and Former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff.
