WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced he is an original co-sponsor of the Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu National Blue Alert Act of 2015, which was introduced today by Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

The legislation establishes a national Blue Alert communications network within the Department of Justice to issue alerts when a law enforcement officer is killed, injured, goes missing in the line of duty, or when there is an imminent and credible threat to an officer. An existing Department of Justice officer would serve as the national coordinator of the Blue Alert communications network and would be tasked with assisting state and local governments using the Blue Alert Plans.

“Our federal, state, and local law enforcement officers risk their lives every single day to keep our families and communities safe,” said Senator Tillis. “A national Blue Alert network could prove to be an indispensable tool for law enforcement, and it should result in making it easier to respond to emergencies and apprehend criminals on the run after they injure or kill a law enforcement official. I am honored to join my colleagues in support of The National Blue Alert Act, and I hope Congress will quickly pass this important legislation and put it on President Obama’s desk.”
